The A.M.A. Council on Medical Education has granted approval to the continuing education programs of the APsaA and its Societies and Institutes.
In a recent memorandum, President Edward Joseph reported this action to the members of the Association and explained its significance. The text of his memorandum follows:
“As many of you know, the American Medical Association and many medical societies have been placing increasing emphasis on continuing education programs which ensure that individuals who have completed their medical education and received their specialty certification will continue to keep up with advances in their field. Some medical societies are making such programs mandatory for continued membership in their organizations. Other medical associations are, at this point, merely recommending it and providing various incentives to the continuation of further education by the individual physician.
“I am glad to inform you that the American Psychoanalytic Association and its various programs have just been approved by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association as regular continuing education programs. Participation and attendance at these undertakings will qualify for whatever form of future certification of continuing education will be needed.
“The letter from Dr. William Ruhe, Secretary to Council on Medical Education of the A.M.A. concludes as follows: ‘We are pleased to inform you that as a result of these meetings, the continuing education program of the institutes and affiliated societies for which the Association takes full responsibility, has been granted full approval by the Council on Medical Education.’
“The American Psychoanalytic Association intends now to provide machinery and vehicles whereby institute and society activities can be given the necessary approval so that participants and attendants at such programs will receive the necessary recognition.
“In the meantime, for those members of the American who wish to participate in the 1972 American Medical Association Physicians' Recognition Award Programs can obtain the necessary applications from the central office by writing Mrs. Helen Fischer.”
