The initial Regional Meeting of the Greater Metropolitan New York Psychoanalytic Societies was held on the weekend of June 2-4, 1972. Nearly 150 analysts and their families gathered at Mohunk Mountain Lodge in upstate New York for the week-end long program of scientific papers and panels.
This meeting, the first of its kind, was the result of a discussion in the Committee on Affiliate Societies of the APsaA, where the further development of regional meetings as a means of strengthening ties between psychoanalytic societies was proposed. This suggestion was taken up by the New Jersey Psychoanalytic Society, which then voted unanimously to sponsor a program bringing together these member societies: the Association for Psychoanalytic Medicine, Long Island Psychoanalytic Society, New Jersey Psychoanalytic Society, New York Psychoanalytic Society, Psychoanalytic Association of New York and Westchester Psychoanalytic Society.
The reaction of those who attended was most enthusiastic, and as a result, the representatives of the six societies selected a council to arrange annual regional meetings.
