At the business meeting on December 15, 1973, Dr. Nathaniel Ross proposed a resolution to condemn the abuse of psychiatry in the Soviet Union. Dr. Ross eloquently described the procedure by which political dissenters are labelled schizophrenic or paranoid, sentenced to long terms in mental and prison hospitals, and deprived of their personal and legal rights. He asked the Executive Committee of the American Psychoanalytic Association to urge Soviet psychiatrists to renounce these activities which are antithetical to the moral and medical standards of our profession. The Executive Committee was instructed to act speedily on this resolution by the nearly unanimous vote of those present.
