Thirty-two candidates/clinical associates participated actively in the program in the Mid-Winter Meetings of the Association in New York City in December. Authors of papers included Drs. Edward Shapiro and John Zinner. Discussants of papers were: Drs. Cassandra Klyman, Marvin Starman, Stanley Stem and Theodore Tabachnik. In addition, twenty-six candidates/clinical associates served as coordinators and presenters for discussion groups.
The Ad Hoc Committee on Affiliate and Associate Membership met with the officers of the NCPCCA for the second time during the December meetings of the APsaA.
The one-year term of appointment permitted candidates/clinical associates under the present policy of the APsaA was discussed. The common experience that the one-year appointment did not give candidates enough time to become working members of a committee was supported by a survey done by NCPCCA candidates/clinical associates who had served on committees since 1970-1 when Drs. Solnit and Wallerstein appointed the first candidates. While those who had served a year or less were often not satisfied with their participation, those who had been members of committees longer than a year felt very positively about their experience. They reported an increased identification with organized psychoanalysis. Ninety percent of these respondents elected to join the APsaA as compared with a general average of forty per cent.
The committee also discussed representation within the American for the two new classes of membership, affiliates and associates. Dr. Stanley Stem, President of the NCPCCA, is currently discussing with appropriate people in the APsaA the wish of candidates and clinical associates to be represented on all committees of the American and to have the right to vote. Plans to implement representation will be elaborated at the meeting this spring in Los Angeles. It was agreed that the NCPCCA would be scheduled to give a report at the Executive Council Meeting at that time. There are also plans for a meeting in Los Angeles of all Associate and Affiliate Members with representatives of the APsaA, the exact date of which will be announced shortly.
At present, Affiliate Members serve on the following committees: Affiliate Societies, Arrangements, Community Psychiatry, Liaison with AAAS, Newsletter, Social Issues, Confidentiality, and the Editorial Board of the Journal. Associate Members have been appointed to the following committees: Affiliate Societies, Arrangements, Liaison with AAAS, Liaison with Professional Organizations, Program, Public Information, Scientific Activities, Psychoanalytic Practice, and the Journal Board.
Those seeking executive positions in the NCPCCA include:
For President-Elect: Linn Campell, M.D. (San Fran.), Pirooz Sholevar, M.D. (Phila. Assoc.).
For Secretary-Elect: Leonard Kapelovitz, M.D. (Denver), Leroy Jaret, M.D. (San Diego).
For Treasurer-Elect: Fred Busch, Ph.D. (Michigan), Carol Jaboc, M.D. (Washington).
The NCPCCA will host a breakfast panel for psychiatric residents at the American Psychiatric Association meetings in Anaheim, California in May. The intention, besides providing a collegial atmosphere, is to introduce residents to analysts-in-training in the hope of inducing residents to learn more about the worth and practical steps in working toward careers as psychoanalysts. Participating in the panel, under the direction of Dr. Pirooz Sholevar, will be Drs. Cal Calarusso, Linn Campbell, Barbara Deutsch, Stanley Stern, Charles Stone. Topics will include requirements for training in psychoanalysis; contributions of psychoanalytic theory to the practice of other therapeutic modalities; and the psychoanalyst as educator, researcher, medical consultant and administrator.
