In Dr. Segel's three-year term, the interest and attendance at scientific meetings has grown rapidly. In particular, the amount of active participation and exchange in discussion groups, panels, interdisciplinary colloquia, Meet-the-Author formats and workshops has increased to such a degree that of 722 registrants at the Los Angeles meeting in May, 400 participated in the scientific program. At this time, active contributors include candidates as well as the most distinguished “elder statesman” who participate as equals, unintimidated, and with unfettered scientific curiosity and creative boldness. Dr. Segel's imagination and enthusiasm have been salutary, and we salute him.
Dr. Arnold M. Cooper of New York, the present Co-Chairman, will continue this enormous task of putting together programs with no break in pace, and has made preliminary plans for the December meetings. Panels on The Psychology of Woman: Adulthood (Dr. Harold Blum, Chairman); Psychic Energy Reconsidered (Dr. Robert S. Wallerstein, Chairman); and Varieties of Oedipal Distortions in Severe Character Pathologies (Dr. Ernst Ticho, Chairman) have been scheduled. A “mini-panel” discussing Models of the Mind by Drs. John E. Gedo and Arnold Goldberg will have both authors present. The Plenary Speaker will be Dr. Paula Heimann of London. There will be a Psychoanalytic Dialogue on Kleinian Theory Today with Drs. Manuel Furer and Hanna Segal, with Dr. George Pollock as moderator.
