The Clinic conducted an extremely interesting program during the week prior to the I.P.A. Congress. Topics ranged from a presentation by Mrs. I. Freud and Mrs. J. Robertson on Observations of an Atypical Baby, with excellent slides taken by Dr. J. Robertson, to a paper on Infant Observation—Its Relevance to Psychoanalytic Training by Dr. W. Ernest Freud. Dr. Joseph Sandler chaired a meeting on Recent Developments in the Index Research, and the Educational Unit of the Hampstead Clinic brought some fascinating cases illustrating the role of the teacher and her therapeutic function within that role.
The Blind Research Group, chaired by Mrs. Dorothy Burlingham, reported on the developmental progress of a backward blind child. Mrs. A. Curson was the reporter. Of interest, too, was a conference chaired by Miss Anna Freud on a report by Mrs. Lundberg on Envy and Despair in the Life of a Three-Year-Old.
Many visitors from Europe and the United States attended. Among them were Drs. Marianne Kris, Mauritz Katan, Anny Katan, and others who have contributed to the beginnings of child analysis. Miss Freud's graciousness and conceptual clarity set the tone for the meeting.
For many participants of the Pre-Congress, it was an experience of refueling, touching base with the psychoanalytic clinic that has been a model for us in the United States. Anna Freud's personality and inspired teaching are at the center of this clinic. Time does not diminish these.
