The establishment of the Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic School under the sponsorship of the New Orleans Psychoanalytic Institute was announced at a special breakfast meeting in the Warwick Hotel on March 31, 1975. Business, professional, and educational leaders from the Houston-Galveston area took part.
The meeting was arranged under the auspices of the Houston-Galvestion Psychoanalytic Foundation. Guest of honor and principal speaker at the announcement breakfast was Herbert S. Gaskill, M.D., President-Elect of the A.Psa.A. and Director of the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis. In his remarks concerning the “meaning and impact of a psychoanalytic institute and foundation upon the community,” Dr. Gaskill stressed the importance of this development for the Houston-Galveston area and the Southwest. He noted that although this area has long held an international reputation as a medical center, no psychoanalytic training has been available without commuting to New Orleans.
Dr. Robert M. Gilliland, First Director of the School, indicated that regular classes, on evenings and weekends, began in September 1974, in temporary quarters. Plans for the school's own facilities are being made. The Houston-Galveston Psychoanalytic Foundation was formed concurrently with the School by area psychoanalysts. Dr. C. Glenn Cambor is the first Chairman of the Foundation. It will seek public support for the training of analysts, research, and community-oriented educational activities.
