A panel, The Situation of the Advanced Candidate and Recent Graduate was incorporated into the program as a discussion group chaired by Dr. James Raney. A stimulating paper by Dr. M. Barrie Richmond provided a springboard for the discussion. He was concerned with the apathy among many new graduates evidenced by the resistance to application for membership in the American. In his view this reflected latent, unresolved intrapsychic problems which were linked to the institute training process. He felt that when candidates were encouraged to suppress and deny feelings and thoughts which might be considered dissident, this could lead to a decrease of creativity, and to reactions of apathy, boredom and hostility during the last phase of training and after graduation. Other panelists contributing to the lively discussion were Drs. James McLaughlin, George Pollock and Stanley Stern.
The Discussion Group, Issues Facing Spouses of Psychoanalytic Candidates, was co-chaired by Drs. Norman Levy and Pirooz Sholevar. Issues facing these “silent partners” of candidates were considered. The protracted period of education with its immense cost, the candidate's absence from the household and the relative geographic immobility were discussed. Panelists included: Sallyann Sack, Ph.D. (Candidate/spouse); Lawrence Sack, M.D. (Candidate/spouse); Martha Montgomery, Ph.D. (Spouse); Martin Hart, M.D. (Spouse); and Linda Dann (Spouse).
Under the chairmanship of Robert Hatcher, Ph.D., the research candidates held a workshop to discuss their special training situation.
Representatives of CAPE were invited to attend meetings of the A.Psa.A. Committee on Confidentiality when the issue of reporting vs. nonreporting analysts is discussed. The CAPE Newsletter plans to initiate a continuing dialogue concerning this complex question. Contributions will be sought from candidates, graduates and training analysts.
At the May 1976 meetings of the A.P.A., CAPE will continue the panel, Psychoanalytic Training and Psychiatric Practice, which was first held in Anaheim last year. The panel, geared for psychiatric residents, will include Dr. Herbert Gaskill. CAPE is also planning to have a display to provide up-to-date information on the availability of psychoanalytic training in the United States.
