The Committee on Associate and Affiliate Membership wants to inform Associate and Affiliate Members that this committee serves as a vehicle through which communications can be exchanged with our Association. Doctor Kenneth T. Calder, Chairman, is most interested in receiving communications from Associate and Affiliate Members.
At present, he would be especially welcome to learn the names of those Associate and Affiliate Members who would like to serve on committees of the American and the committees of their preference. Associate and Affiliate Members interested in such service should write to Dr. Calder to indicate special interests, talents, etc.
Appointments of Associate and Affiliate Members will respect the guidelines suggested at a meeting of Chairmen of Educational Committees of the American of December 18, 1975, which reads as follows: “The members concluded and agreed that the Chairmen of the Board on Professional Standards should be informed that the needs of all candidates and the interests of the psychoanalytic educational process would be best served if candidates were not assigned to any committee of the Board on Professional Standards except for those joint committees of the Board and the Council which have neither organizational nor evaluative responsibilities. Additionally, the members suggest that those responsible for appointing candidates at the national level should continue the practice of prior consultation with the chairman of the local Institute.”
In Baltimore, CAPE co-sponsored three discussion groups with the American Psychoanalytic Association. “The Relationship of the Experience of the Graduate Psychoanalyst to Psychoanalytic Training” was continued, chaired by James O. Raney, M.D. of Mercer Island, Washington. Dr. Brian Bird was the principal discussant. A new workshop “The Supervisee's View of Supervision,” was chaired by Doryann Lebe, M.D. of the Southern California Institute. Dr. Janice N. Kaufman was principal discussant. “Issues Facing the Spouses of Psychoanalytic Candidates” was continued, chaired by Drs. Norman Levy from Brooklyn, N.Y. and Pirooz Sholevar of Philadelphia. All three workshops generated active discussion. Drs. Lawrence Sack and Pirooz Sholevar were active in planning a highly successful Interdisciplinary Colloquium on “Health Insurance Coverage of Psychoanalytic Treatment.” The Colloquium was chaired by Drs. Robert Gibson and Robert Gillman. Candidates also served as discussants for a number of papers.
CAPE election results were announced at the Board of Delegates meeting in Baltimore, reflecting heavy membership response to ballots mailed this spring. The new officers of CAPE are: Drs. Jacob (Wash.), Treasurer; Lawrence Sack (Balt.-D.C.), Secretary-Elect; and Elise Snyder (West. New Engl.), Treasurer-Elect. Paula Bernstein, Ph.D. (Denver) is the new Editor of CAPE News.
CAPE members were active at the meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in Miami, part of CAPE's on-going effort to stimulate interest in psychoanalytic training and demonstrate the usefulness of psychoanalytic understanding for psychiatric practice at annual APA meetings. A scientific booth was set up in the exhibit area which displayed on a lighted panel the location of training centers for adult and child psychoanalysis around the country. Bulletins were available from the different institutes, along with the booklet on APsaA Standards for Training. The booth, designed and attended by Don T. Mosher, M.D., attracted the interest of many psychiatrists who stopped by to talk and ask questions. The morning panel on “Psychoanalytic Training and Psychiatric Practice” was repeated for the second year. Drs. Herbert Gaskill, Barbara Deutsch, Stanley Stern, and Charles Stone were the panelists, with Pirooz Sholevar the moderator. A new evening panel on “Psychoanalytic Aspects of Psychopharmacological Treatment” was developed and chaired by Charles Stone, M.D. Panelists were Drs. Pietro T. Tedesco, Don Mosher, Gordon Lewis, and Pirooz Sholevar. CAPE also held a luncheon meeting for candidates in Miami.
