The Association for Child Psychoanalysis, Inc. held a scientific weekend meeting in London, England on July 23rd through July 25th, 1976. The theme of the meeting was “Childhood Fears and Phobias” and the American participants were: Drs. Anny Katan, Maurits Katan, Marianne Kris, Peter Neubauer, Ishak Ramzy, President of the Association, Albert Solnit and Arthur Valenstein, among others. There were a total of 180 participants from all over Europe, including two child analysts from Hungary.
Miss Anna Freud participated in the deliberations and with her usual direct and lucid style, addressed the plenary session. She summarized the highlights of the conference and commented on the way in which the Association had changed and grown from its inception ten years ago, in 1966, when the first meeting was held in Topeka, Kansas. The Association began with relatively few members and grew to its present size of almost four hundred, including members from various European countries. In addition, child analysis has
attracted many male psychoanalysts. She remarked that “It is high time that we acknowledged that children do not belong only to their mothers or their aunties.” She also expressed her hope that growth in the association will continue to be related to growth in our knowledge of child analysis.
The theme of the Spring meeting, to take place March 25th-27th, 1977 in Phoenix, Arizona, is “The Child Analyst and the Family.” This topic will also be part of the activities of the Association at the International Congress of Psychoanalysis in Jerusalem in August, 1977.
