Certification has been under discussion intermittently for many years in the Board as well as by individual members. During this time, while a number of certification procedures have been proposed and discussed, the Board has in fact been charged to certify the qualification of applicants as a prerequisite to membership in the Association. The proposal currently before the Board is simply to make the implicit certification explicit, with the addition that applicants may request and obtain certification without the requirement of membership in the Association. The present proposal will not affect the long-standing policy that applicants for membership shall have their qualifications certified by the Board on Professional Standards. All present Active Members, who have been implicitly certified by our membership procedures in the past, will be issued explicit certification in psychoanalysis.

In order to be fully functional the policies and procedures on accreditation and disaccreditation will probably evolve significantly in the near future. The work of the Ad Hoc Committee suggests important new models for consultative arrangements between the Board and an Institute. The final report of the Committee is scheduled for December.
The Committee on Child Analysis is working on revised standards for training which are expected to be discussed soon.
The Committee on Training for Research is working on further clarification of the requirements for waivers for non-medical candidates.
