Under the chairmanship of Richard C. Simons, the Committee on Associate and Affiliate Membership met in Atlanta during the Spring meeting for its first session since its reorganization from an Ad Hoc Committee to that of a Joint Standing Committee of Board and Council. The committee had functioned for several years on an ad hoc basis and had essentially consisted of the officers of the American and the officers of CAPE, with very little representation of those Affiliate and Associate Members who were not members of CAPE. Because the American now has approximately 600 Affiliate Members and approximately 400 Associate Members, it was felt that there should be a standing committee responsive to their particular needs and concerns. Thus this reorganization reflects a growing recognition by the American of the needs of our Associate and Affiliate Members, and also a growing recognition of the importance of fostering and encouraging their identification with the American as early as possible in their analytic careers.
The committee has several long-range goals. It plans to sponsor scientific programs and forums that are specifically addressed to the interests of our candidates and recent graduates. These forums may also include a social welcoming for new Associate and Affiliate Members, similar to what is now being done for new Active Members. The committee hopes to work constructively with CAPE, but also wants to provide a voice for the large number of candidates and recent graduates who are not members of CAPE. Finally, the committee would like to continue to find ways of effectively involving our candidates and recent graduates in the American, to whatever degree seems most appropriate in each individual situation. And it welcomes any ideas or suggestions from any member in regard to these goals, or any other goals which should also be considered.
Activities of the committee will be reported periodically in the Newsletter of the American. The first scientific presentation sponsored by the committee will be held on Thursday afternoon, December 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. during the next Fall Meeting in New York City. Dr. Roy Schafer will speak on “Action Language in Relation to Psychoanalytic Theory and Technique.” This presentation and the ensuing discussion will be open only to Affiliate and Associate Members. A collation will follow the scientific presentation.
There are currently nine members of this newly reconstituted committee. The two Active Members are: (1) Richard C. Simons, M.D. (Denver) and (2) Virginia L. Clower, M.D. (Washington, D.C.). The two Associate Members are: (1) Maurice G. Marcus, M.D. (a graduate of Western New England Institute) and (2) Martin Miller, M.D. (a graduate of the adult program of the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute, and a child analytic candidate in the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute). The five Affiliate Members are: (1) Michael Blumenfield, M.D. (a fifth year candidate in the New York Psychoanalytic Institute); (2) Erik Gann, M.D. (a third year candidate in the San Francisco Institute); (3) K. Lynne Moritz, M.D. (a fourth year candidate in the St. Louis Institute); (4) Estelle Shane, Ph.D. (a research candidate in the Los Angeles Institute); and (5) Jerome A. Winer, M.D. (a fifth year candidate in the Chicago Institute).
