On the recommendation of The Committee on Honorary Membership, the Executive Council of the American in its December meeting in New York elected Professor Steven Marcus of Columbia University Honorary Member of the Association. Perhaps best known to the general public for his book The Other Victorians, a study of Victorian sexuality as reflected in Victorian pornography, Professor Marcus is a scholar, a teacher, and literary critic with a national reputation.
His extensive writings manifest a deep understanding of psychoanalysis. He has made valuable contributions to our field, beginning with the one volume abridgement of Jones' biography of Freud, which he edited with Lionel Trilling in 1961. He has written papers relevant to psychoanalysis and is contributing introductory essays to new translations of Freud as well as to re-editions of old translations.
Professor Marcus' interest in psychoanalysis is also evident in his professional activities. He has served as discussant of papers at meetings of this Association and at the Columbia Psychoanalytic Clinic for Training and Research. He gave the First Kardiner Lecture and has conducted interdisciplinary seminars for the Columbia Institute. At Columbia University he functions as a liaison person for psychoanalysis and the humanities, helping to conduct the Lionel Trilling Seminars, where lectures related to psychoanalysis are often presented. As the Committee on Honorary Membership commented in their recommendation, “his is a voice sympathetic to psychoanalysis, a voice which is heard in a major university and in the field of literature at large.”
