Volumes I and II of the Downstate Psychoanalytic Institute 25th Anniversary Series have been published recently, and will be followed shortly by Volumes III and IV.
The Series commemorates the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Downstate Psychoanalytic Institute. Although the Institute later transferred to the New York University Medical Center, with which it is now affiliated, and the Downstate Institute Series is authored by members of the faculty of the present Psychoanalytic Institute at the New York University Medical Center, it was decided to retain its original title.
The volumes represent the result of close collaboration between the Downstate Institute and the Psychoanalytic Association of New York, to which most of the Institute's faculty members belong. P.A.N.Y., in fact, sponsored and underwrote the project. Publication during 1980 coincides with P.A.N.Y.'s 25th anniversary, so that the volumes contribute to its celebration as well.
Alan J. Eisnitz, M.D., chaired a distinguished editorial board, with Mark Kanzer, M.D., as chief editor and architect of the series, and Jules Glenn, M.D., co-editor of Volumes I and II. Bernard Fine, M.D. and Shelley Orgel, M.D., were editors of Volume III, and Joseph Coltrera, M.D. of Volume IV.
The first two Volumes, Freud and His Self Analysis and Freud and His Patients, present new and original insights into the creative forces that shaped Freud's thinking, his self analysis and his works, discussing the relation of his case histories to subsequent theoretical and technical developments as well as present applications. Volume III, titled Clinical Psychoanalysis, includes 19 original articles, ranging from brainwashing to the Medusa myth. Volume IV, Lives, Events and Other Players, focuses on psycho-biography and includes articles on Sylvia Plath and Yukio Mishima.
