The Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis is planning to pay tribute to the late Joan Fleming, who was its Dean of Education in the fifties and sixties. She was also editor of the psychoanalytic education section of the Institute's Annual of Psychoanalysis, and continued to go back to Chicago on special occasions, such as workshops of the training and supervising analysts.
During one of Fleming's recent visits, Dr. Louis Shapiro (her successor as Dean) was able to videotape an interview with her, which will be shown at the Institute's Wednesday research meeting on March 25—not as a “eulogy,” but as a celebration of her part in Chicago's history.
A memorial fund has been also established at the Institute in her honor, the Joan Fleming Fund, which will be used to further psychoanalytic educational activities. And Volume X of The Annual of Psychoanalysis will be dedicated to her, with papers focused on psychoanalytic education. This volume will appear in late 1982.
