To the Editor:
I read with interest on Page 3 of the Newsletter of June, 1981, the article entitled “Kolansky Appointment an Academic First,” which states that, with the founding of the section on child and adolescent psychoanalysis in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, and the appointment of Dr. Harold Kolansky as its head, this may represent the first such formal recognition given to child and adolescent psychoanalysis by a medical school.
For historical purposes I should like to relate that Dr. Anny Katan was appointed Professor of Child Analysis (and Dr. Maurits Katan Professor of Psychoanalysis) on July 1, 1955 at the then Western Reserve University School of Medicine (now Case Western Reserve) in Cleveland. This occurred nine years after the Doctors Katan arrived here to set up a program in psychoanalysis at the school, having been invited by Dr. Douglas Bond, then Chairman of the Division of Psychiatry.
