At the recent May meeting of the American Psychiatric Association in New Orleans, Association member Stanley I. Greenspan, M.D. was one of the recipients of the APA's Blanche F. Ittleson Research Prize for outstanding research contributions to child psychiatry. The award was based on Dr. Greenspan's contributions to the theoretical and clinical foundations for the clinical practice of preventive intervention with infants, young children, and their families at risk for emotional disturbances, and to developing a comprehensive theory of personality development and related assessment approaches that integrate psychodynamic, affective, and cognitive aspects of functioning. This year's Ittleson Prize was shared with two other recipients, Dr. Donald Cohen of Yale and the team of Dr. Leon Cytryn and Dr. Donald McKnew of NIMH.
Dr. Greenspan is currently Chief of the Mental Health Study Center and the Director of the Clinical Infant Development Program at the NIMH. He is also Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at George Washington University School of Medicine.
