At its May 1982 meeting, the Executive Council went on record as opposing the proposed bill to require notification of parents of adolescents who seek contraceptives at a federally supported family planning center.
A statement was sent to Ms. Marjorie Mecklenberg, Deputy Director of Health and Human Services, asserting: “As psychoanalysts familiar with the development of sexuality in adolescents, it is our opinion that the proposed measures will interfere with the important relationship of physician/patient, and it will have the paradoxical effect of increasing unwanted adolescent pregnancies.”
