In May, the Executive Council voted to support the concept of some form of permanent membership for all graduates in good standing of accredited Institutes and recommended that:
“The President of the American Psychoanalytic Association, in consultation with the Chairman of the Board on Professional Standards, appoint an Ad Hoc Committee to work out the details to accomplish this purpose in an expeditious fashion.”
After consultation with Homer Curtis, Chairman of the Board on Professional Standards, I appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on a Form of Membership for Graduates of Accredited Institutes. The members of the Committee are: Herbert Gaskill, Chairman, Milton Bronstein, Gerald Freiman, O. Eugene Baum, David Carlson, Arnold Rothstein, James McLaughlin, and William Meissner.
The Committee, at an intensive and highly productive meeting at the Association headquarters on June 26, developed a clear and thoughtful proposal, which will be ready for discussion and possible action during the December meetings. If the Council votes to approve it, it will be mailed to the membership for a vote. We hope this issue will soon be settled.
Richard Isay informs me that his committee on Desirability of Training Nonmedical Candidates will have met several times and be ready to report on its deliberations in December. This issue seems also to be moving toward closure.
