The next biennial World Congress for Mental Health will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the mental health movement at its meeting in Washington on July 22 to 28, 1983.
This will be the first Congress ever to be jointly sponsored by a range of mental health organizations, including the U.S. National Mental Health Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and the American Psychological Association. Collaborating will be the National Association of Social Workers and the American Nurses Association.
The theme of the Congress is “Personal and Social Responsibility in the Search for Mental Health.” Subthemes will include problems of violence, community and family responsibility, volunteers, self-help groups of patients and former patients, and health promotion in all of its aspects.
Congress participants will include citizen volunteers, representatives of most professions, and representatives of self-help and patient groups. An attendance of over 1,200 people from 40 different countries is expected.
