Graduates of accredited institutes eligible to apply for Extended Associate Membership under the provisions of the Board on Professional Standards waiver can do so only until December 31, 1984, when the waiver expires. The deadline for submission of the application for consideration at the December, 1984 meeting is November 15, 1984.
Information about the 1983 Bylaw establishing a new category of membership designated as “Extended Associate Member” and the special waiver that pertains to it, have been disseminated far and wide in letters sent to all of those to whom it applies, as well as to the institutes and societies.
This has also been a subject for discussion and clarification at the Committee on Membership meetings with Society and Institute Representatives at the American's Fall and Spring meetings. The following summary is presented to assure that all who are eligible and interested are fully apprised.
Associate Membership, as a time limited (three-year) form of membership, continues as an option for all full graduates. It is expected that many individuals will achieve certification within this three year span. If not, however, it is now possible to become an Extended Associate Member and then apply for certification at any future time. If for any reason, the individual does not become certified, the Extended Associate Membership provides a time-unlimited form of participation in the American.
The 1983 Bylaws quoted above apply, however, only to those who are Associate Members. In December, 1983, the Board provided a waiver of the new Bylaws that permits application for Extended Associate Membership to all full clinical graduates of accredited institutes in their third postgraduation year or beyond. The intent was to allow an ingathering of those who had not applied for membership under the old procedures, and who now wished to do so, to take advantage of the new membership category.
Richard M. Greenberg, Chairman of the Membership Committee, invites those eligible for the waiver to take this opportunity for membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association. In addition to the scientific and educational rewards and membership benefits, including malpractice insurance, membership provides the opportunity to support and enhance the goals of psychoanalysis, psychoanalysts, and the national organization.
Dr. Greenberg urges the applications be submitted as soon as possible. The Membership Committee and the Central Office stand ready to offer information and assistance to facilitate your application. Application forms and the substantive text of the Bylaws are available from the Central Office.
