In a departure from years of tradition, the semi-annual Meeting of Members was held on Friday instead of Saturday morning at the recent December meeting in New York. To provide a social occasion for members, a special buffet breakfast was served prior to the meeting.
Over 200 members attended. The combination of the special breakfast and the change in date and agenda for the meeting achieved the goal of a better attended, more productive, and more successful meeting.
For some time, the officers of the Association had been troubled by the poor attendance at Meetings of Members. The early hour on Saturday, combined with lengthy reports of meetings which many had attended earlier in the week, seemed to be an unappealing and unsuccessful format.
The agenda for this meeting was more lively. Introductions of many prestigious guests from other disciplines and members in key positions in the Association opened the meeting. Reports were briefer and more stimulating and discussion from the floor was encouraged. The experiment was pronounced a success. The Executive Committee plans to continue to use the new format at future meetings.
