The American Psychoanalytic Association, founded in 1911, will be seventy-five years old next year. A special program is planned for Friday, May 9 at the Annual Meeting in May in Baltimore. Charles Brenner will give the Plenary Address. Leo Stone, Robert Michels, and Robert Wallerstein will participate in a panel devoted to assessing the current status and future prospects of psychoanalysis. Professors Peter Gay, John Burnham, and I.B. Cohen will join in a panel which examines the contributions of psychoanalysis to American intellectual life. A special Birthday Ball Friday evening will top off the celbration.
George H. Pollock has been nominated for the office of President-Elect of the American Psychiatric Association. He has been Treasurer of that organization since 1980. Dr. Pollock is a past-president of the American (1974-1975) and has served our Association in many capacities. He has served both the American and the APA as the liaison to the other group for many years. His bottomless enthusiasm and energy have led to an enormously productive career, and his countless activities and accomplishments within psychoanalysis and psychiatry are well known to us all.
Several other members of the American have been nominated for other offices in the APA. John J. McGrath, who is Chairman of our Government Relations and Insurance Committee and a teaching analyst at the Baltimore-DC Institute, has been nominated for the office of Treasurer. He has served for six years on the APA board of Trustees and as Chairman of the Board's Fiscal Oversight Committee. Herbert Pardes, who is Director of the New York Psychiatric Institute and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, has been nominated for Vice-President.
Alexander Grinstein was elected president of the Sigmund Freud Archive at a recent meeting of its board in New York City. Harold Blum was elected executive director and Bernard Pacella secretary-treasurer. The Archive is responsible for a large collection of Freud's letters and papers, as well as those of many analysts who were his contemporaries. It also is responsible for the Freud Museum which will open soon at 20 Maresfield Gardens, which was the Freuds' home in London.
The new officers plan a thorough review of the Archive policies, including those relating to access to the Library of Congress's collection of Freud-related documents, one of the largest collections in the Library.
