On January 15, 1987, Richard C. Simons, President of the American Psychoanalytic Association, sent a letter to all Active, Associate and Affiliate Members of the APA concerning the current status of the antitrust action against the American Psychoanalytic Association, the International Psychoanalytic Association, the New York Psychoanalytic Institute and the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Simons addressed the following issues: the change in our legal representation to Joel I. Klein of the Washington, D.C., law firm of Onek, Klein & Farr; the unanimous vote of the Executive Council to empower the Executive Committee to assist the IPA with future legal costs in connection with the suit; and the proposal, strongly endorsed by the Executive Council and unanimously supported by the Executive Committee, to modify our Regional Association status in the IPA to allow institutes outside of the APA to apply directly for membership in the IPA. Simons encouraged members to attend the Montreal meetings of the IPA from July 26 to July 31, 1987, not only as an expression of solidarity with our analytic colleagues throughout the world but also to vote on the important amendments to the constitution and byelaws of the IPA to permit the proposed change in our regional association status.
