The Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute, in response to local interest and concern with the certification process, invited Irwin Solomon, Chairman of the Certification Committee, to address psychoanalysts in the greater Los Angeles community on process and problems of certification. In preparation for this visit, a committee of the Los Angeles Institute, appointed by its Director, surveyed the membership of the Los Angeles Institute, as well as making inquiries of members of other local and regional institutes.
An extensive written document, labeled by Solomon in his report to the Board as a model for institute self-scrutiny, paved the way for a most productive meeting attended by approximately 80 analysts from the Los Angeles, Southern California, and San Diego institutes. As a result of this meeting, increased interest in and activity with the certification process was evidenced from that area, the members reporting in general that they felt they had an opportunity to be heard and responded to. Dr. Solomon was commended by the Los Angeles Society and Institute for the sensitive and forthright way he addressed himself to the problems and issues raised. For his part, Solomon told the Board that applause was due to the Los Angeles Institute for facing the situation squarely. He considered the meeting a healthy development that others might well follow.
