For the second time in two years, an election of officers of the American Psychoanalytic Association was greatly affected by nomination by petition of members. Phyllis Tyson, whom the nominating committee at its May meeting named as a candidate for Councilor-at-Large, was, in July, nominated by petition for the office of Secretary. She then withdrew her candidacy for Councilor. David Werman has been named to replace her as one of the four candidates for the two Councilor-at-Large positions to be filled in this fall's election.
The nominating committee's candidates for secretary are Irwin Marill and Donald Meyers. The other original candidates for Councilor-at-Large are Rebecca Solomon, Lawrence Chalfin, and Dexter Bullard, Jr. The secretary of the Association is elected for a two-year term and is also a member of the Executive Committee and an ex-officio voting member of the Board on Professional Standards. The two Councilors-at-Large elected this fall will serve four-year terms and will join eight other Councilors-at-Large and the 42 representative Councilors (one from each local society and study group) who make up the Executive Council, the legislative body of the Association.
In a separate action, the Board on Professional Standards, at the May meetings, elected Marvin Margolis its new chairman. He will take office as Chairman of the Board and member of the Executive Committee of the Association at the May 1991 meetings and serve a term of three years.
Nominations by petition have been rare in the history of the Association, but last year there were three— two for President-Elect and one for Councilor-at-Large— and two of the three nominees by petition won election, Bernard Pacella, President-Elect, and Helen Myers, Councilor-at-Large. Additional nominations are possible: candidates may be nominated by petition of 20 Active members provided that the petition is received in the Central Office by October 15.
