According to official sources, Jorge Garcia Badaracco and Horacio Etchegoyen have been proposed to the Nominating Committee to run for the office of President-Elect of the International Psychoanalytic Association. Official designation of candidates for this office, as well as for the offices of Treasurer and Regional Vice-Presidents, will be announced shortly before the opening of the IPA congress in Buenos Aires on July 28, 1991. The election will be conducted by ballot of those members attending the business meeting on July 31.
Jorge Garcia Badaracco, nominated by the Executive Committee of the Asociacion Psicoanalitica Argentina (Argentine Psychoanalytic Association), has long been active in the work of psychoanalytic organizations, first with the Paris Psychoanalytic Society, where he obtained his psychoanalytic training, and later with the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association, whose president he was for two consecutive terms extending from 1980 to 1984.
Dr. Garcia Badaracco, a pioneer in the application of psychoanalysis to institutional treatment in Argentina, has, since 1987, been Chairman of the Mental Health Department of the School of Medicine at the University of Buenos Aires.
He has made outstanding contributions to the psychoanalytic understanding and treatment of several psychopathologies. He is widely recognized as an expert in the psychoanalysis of psychosis and has published widely. Dr. Garcia Badaracco has presented his work at International Psychoanalytic Association Congresses in Madrid, Hamburg, and Rome and will be an official contributor on the subject of “Psychic Change” at the forthcoming IPA Congress in Buenos Aires.
Dr. Garcia Badaracco believes that this is a crucial period in the history of the international psychoanalytic movement. For the first time, Latin America will shoulder the responsibility for the leadership of the IPA. At the same time, current organizational developments demand an increasing attention by the IPA to the singularity and the diversity of the needs and problems of their component societies.
In 1977 Dr. Etchegoyen founded the Buenos Aires Psychoanalytic Association, which nominated him, and was its first president. He has been a member of the executive committees of such international organizations as the FEPAL and the IPA, where he served two terms as vice president.
A well-known scientific leader, Dr. Etchegoyen has been at the forefront of the dissemination of psychoanalytic ideas in Argentina and elsewhere. He has made many presentations to the Argentine, Pan-American, and International Psychoanalytic Congresses and is the author of more than 60 articles published in Argentina, American, and International journals as well as of two books, which have been translated into Italian, Portuguese, and English: Psychoanalytic Clinical Studies on Sexuality and The Fundamentals of Psychoanalytic Technique .
Dr. Etchegoyen trained in the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association and later was a postdoctoral fellow at the Tavistock Clinic and a guest member of the British Psychoanalytic Association. He became a Full Member of the Argentine Psychoanalytic Association in 1970 and has been a Training Analyst since 1974.
Dr. Etchegoyen was the Course Director for both his local and his national associations on “Theory of Psychoanalytical Technique” and “The Structure and Evolution of Psychoanalytic Ideas.” He has been Professor of Medical Psychology and Psychiatry and at the University of Cuyo and also a member of the Selection Committee for the Appointment of Chairmen of Psychiatry and Mental Health at the University of Buenos Aires.
