One of the most valuable features of the Resident Fellowship Program has been the provision of analyst mentors to the Fellows. This year, in an expanded effort at outreach, mentors will be assigned also to applicants not selected for the award. These gifted young psychiatrists, after all, are deeply interested in psychoanalysis and can benefit from contact with mentors who will read papers with them, advise them regarding research interests, introduce them to analysts with similar interests and to local candidates, and invite them to society meetings. To date, sixty young psychiatrists have applied for the fellowships, and each has been assigned a mentor. The following colleagues have generously volunteered to serve in the mentoring program: Adrienne P. Applegarth, Roy N. Aruffo, Rosemary H. Balsam, Robert L. Bergman, Melvin Bornstein, Ernest R. Braasch, Harry R. Brickman, Thomas W. Campbell, Judith F. Chused, Calvin A. Colarusso, Norman Doidge, Ralph P. Engle, Joan B. Erle, Arthur J. Farley, Ronald Fleischmann, David F. Freeman, James P. Frosch, Glen O. Gabbard, Robert A. Click, Lindsay A. Graham, R. Perry Grant, Paul Gray, Daniel P. Greenson, Theodore J. Jacobs, John S. Kafka, Anthony M. Kowalski, Anton O. Kris, Melvin Mandel, Diane Martinez, Malcolm N. McLeod, K. Lynne Moritz, Malkah T Notman, Thomas J. Pappadis, David L. Raphling, Samuel Ritvo, Ana-Maria Rizzuto, Steven Roose, Joyce L. Root, Donald L. Rosenblitt, Stephen Rosenblum, Ralph E. Roughton, Ellen B. Rowntree, David M. Sachs, Melvin A. Scharfman, Beth J. Seelig, Theodore Shapiro, Ronda R. Shaw, Lee Shershow, Alan Z. Skolnikoff, Stephen M. Sonnenberg, Louis Spitz, Philip M. Stein, Mervin S. Stewart, Sara S. Tucker, Robert S. Wallerstein, Edward M. Weinshel, Edwin C. Wood, Judith A. Yanof, and Alan B. Zients.
For several years Yale University Press has donated books to fellowship recipients and to their departments of psychiatry. This year Analytic Press, International Universities Press, and Jason Aronson will also award books; the IPA will provide one-year subscriptions to its newsletter and to the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, and the New York Psychoanalytic Institute will issue “library cards” for accessing its on-line library. Despite the current climate of gloom, it would appear, from the perspective of the Fellowship Program at least, that interest in psychoanalysis is flourishing.
