Scheduled for November at the Horace H. Rackman School of Graduate Studies, Ann Arbor, the conference is free to members of the public who register by October 15.
Marvin Margolis, president-elect of the American Psychoanalytic Association, will join in opening the conference. The keynote speaker is Richard Wollheim, Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. Five half-day panels feature U.S. and European contributors in several disciplines, including anthropology, art history, literature, media studies, philosophy, political science, psychoanalysis, psychology, and sociology. Panels include The Challenge of Cultural Variety (Atwood Gaines, Robert Levy, Michael Rustin); Territoriality and Reductionism (Louis Sass, Bennett Simon, Victor Wolfenstein); Art and Affect (Richard Allen, Stuart Feder, Ellen Handler Spitz); History and Politics (Helmut Dahmer, Elisabeth Young-Bruehl, Slavoj Zizek); and On Primitivity (Mary Ann Doane, Sander-Gilman, James Grotstein).
In the weeks preceding the conference, a series of five preparatory lectures will be offered by Barnaby Barratt of the Michigan Institute and by Kimberlyn Leary, Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. The purpose is to sensitize interested faculty and students to the concepts and issues to be taken up by the conference. Those wishing to attend are asked to register before October 15 by sending their name, address, and discipline to George C. Rosenwald, Ph.D., Department of Psychology, 580 Union Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48109. Reduced hotel rates and complete program are available.
