On the weekend of October 7–9 the Pittsburgh Psychoanalytic Foundation will present the first Wodnicki Program in Applied Psychoanalysis. Participants include the analytically trained Cynthia MacDonald, award-winning poet, director of the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston, and a member of the Houston-Galveston Institute and Society; Bruce Sklarew, psychoanalyst, founder of the Forum for the Psychoanalytic Study of Film, editor of a book to appear this fall on film and psychoanalysis, and organizer of film study programs at The American; and Ellen Handler Spitz, research graduate of the Columbia Institute and the author of Art and the Psyche (Yale, 1985) and a new book to appear in November.
On Friday evening, a poetry reading by MacDonald will be followed by a reception at the Frick Art and Historical Center in Point Breeze. Saturday's all-day program, entitled New Vistas, Old Terrain, will be held at the Frick Fine Arts Auditorium on the Pitt Campus in Oakland and is devoted to psychoanalytic exploration of the interior experiences of art, poetry, and film. MacDonald and Spitz will present in the morning, followed in the afternoon by Sklarew. Following his presentation there will be a showing and discussion of Bertolucci's The Conformist.
