Carol Lindemann Abend and Sander Abend were the hosts for an inaugural fund-raising dinner, held at their home on December 15, for the American Psychoanalytic Foundation. Analysts and friends concerned for the future of analytic education and research, and hoping to effect outreach through focused programming, lent their generous and enthusiastic support.
Established in June 1994 by the American Psychoanalytic Association, the foundation's Board of Directors is chaired by Harvey Rich (Washington, D.C.). The other members are Nadine Levinson (Dana Point, California), secretary; Harold Kulish (Birmingham, Michigan), treasurer; Carol Lindemann (New York); and Selma Duckler (Portland, Oregon). Marvin Margolis is liaison from The American, and Helen Fischer serves as consultant.
The first task for the board is to determine how it can best shape the foundation to assist psychoanalytic research, candidates' financial needs, fellowship programs for those in residency, and graduate training and other special projects to educate the public about psychoanalysis.
The board was pleased to request that the Executive Council approve the appointment of Selma Duckler. Vice-president of the Oregon Psychoanalytic Foundation, she is well known and highly esteemed for her innovative and successful leadership of the foundation movement, both in Oregon and on the Committee on Foundations of The American.
