You now have the opportunity to carry in your pocket the contents of the premier psychoanalytic journals that if stacked would rise higher than a four-story building.
Searchable, full-text editions of the most respected psychoanalytic journals will be available in a beta-version CD-ROM this fall. The CD-ROM is a project of an Anglo-American joint venture, Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP), which was launched at the eighty-fifth annual meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association in Los Angeles in May.
The American has committed a $300,000 loan to this innovative support program for psychoanalytic education and scholarship.
The disc comprises all the editorial content of six significant psychoanalytic journals: The International Journal of Psycho-Analysis The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association
The Psychoanalytic Quarterly
The International Review of Psycho-Analysis, and Contemporary Psychoanalysis (through 1994) and
The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child (through 1993).
It is hoped a demo version will be available at the December meeting in New York City. The beta version of the CD-ROM, which was advertised earlier at an extremely low price in a limited quantity, has already sold out. We expect this beta version to be ready in early 1997. Because the demand for the beta version so exceeded our expectations, we are offering a special pre-publication price on the alpha (or final) version of the disc that will be in effect from September 1, 1996 to January 15, 1997 only: $645 for individuals, $1045 for institutions. Prices will go up to $695 and $1095 for individuals and institutions respectively as of January 15th. (Keep this in mind when planning your holiday gift list.)
Subscribers to the trial CD-ROM disc (which may indeed be flawless), will receive the final version at no additional cost when they return the beta disc.
Regular updates with expanded content are planned if this venture is as useful as anticipated. Owners of the first disc will receive significant discounts on subsequent updates.
Available for both IBM and Mac platforms, the beta disc is searchable by key word or combinations. Users will have one-click access to articles and reviews for downloadable references and cross-journal bibliographies.
Full-text searching makes a consolidated index unnecessary, so the disc is useful even for those who have many of the print journals on their shelves. The ability to download part or all of a reference will make research more pleasurable and provide opportunities to those who have been discouraged by the work of amassing material from distant library collections. You will always have journal articles on hand even if they have not previously been in your private library.
Computer buffs who find and report errors in the beta disc will receive a (as yet unspecified) reward. Researchers can help us identify typographical or other errors, improving the ultimate product.
Others who might benefit from the beta version are teachers scrambling to prepare their curricula and reading lists before the second semester, and anyone who wishes to support psychoanalysis by contributing copies to libraries (at the institutional price).
Or just be the first on the block to own one!
