Now is the time to plan your family vacation to coincide with the 86th Annual Meeting of The American, to be held May 14–18 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Diego, one of the best vacation spots in the world.
With an ideal climate—in May, 57 degrees at night to 70 during the day—San Diego has seventy miles of beaches, two sparkling bays, several mountain ranges, a breathtaking desert, and an international border. Calm, shallow swimming perfect for young children can be found in La Jolla Cove, while the beaches of North County and some of La Jolla's other beaches offer the finest surfing on the West Coast. Seaport Village, adjacent to the Hyatt, combines shopping, dining, and great views of San Diego Bay. Sea World and the San Diego Zoo are world-famous tourist attractions, particularly enchanting to children. Less known but even more exciting is the San Diego Wild Animal Park, a 2,150-acre preserve where 3,000 animals roam as they would in their native habitats. Visitors can tour the park by monorail and imagine being in the jungle as they observe rarely seen species.
Whether you want to be airborne, earthbound, or make a splash, San Diego offers families countless outdoor activities. A myriad of sports can be enjoyed in the sparkling waters of Mission Bay, a 4,600-acre aquatic park near the Hyatt, and at the dozens of nearby golf courses, tennis courts, and scenic jogging, hiking, and biking trails. Most important, the American Psychoanalytic Association's first Annual 5-K Road Race will be held Saturday morning.
Downtown San Diego is an exciting, constantly changing showplace of department stores, specialty shops, hotels, restaurants, galleries, and theaters. The Gaslamp Quarter has been restored to turn-of-the-century elegance. San Diego is becoming a dining mecca, offering foods of the world and exquisite Pacific Rim and California cuisine in quaint-to-posh restaurants, many with spectacular views.
Finally, across the border, Tijuana's cultural center brings to life Mexico's colorful history. And the entrance to the famous Baja California peninsula, with its world-famous beaches and resorts, begins just below Tijuana.
