The first annual Psychoanalytic Road Race will take place May in San Diego. World-class elite psychoanalysts will lead the field, carefully follow the field, or cheer from the sidelines during this fast-paced event. Not since Freud analyzed Max Eitingon while walking swiftly through the streets of Vienna has psychoanalytic perambulation assumed such historic significance. Precirculated papers will be available for early entrants (really), but free discussion will be encouraged during the event.
The five-kilometer race will have categories for runners, strollers, and “official onlookers.” While it is anticipated that each group will evolve its own dynamic interaction during the event, all three groups will convene at the finish line for a plenary prize ceremony. Serious racing will not be discouraged. (In fact, the race is being organized by Kathy Loper Events, an experienced race organizing company.) Prizes will be awarded for the fastest runners, the fastest walkers, and the most entertaining discussants. All entrants will receive Freud T-shirts. Robert Pyles, president-elect of The American, is honorary chairman of the event as well as a participant.
Race officials will record each entrant's time and refreshments will be available. The race is specifically planned for analysts, candidates, colleagues, and their family members and friends attending The American's Annual Meeting. However, other participants will be welcome. Psychiatrists attending the American Psychiatric Association's meeting, which begins May 17 in San Diego, are especially invited.
The race begins at 7 a.m. in front of the Hyatt Regency Hotel, and will follow a scenic, level five-kilometer course. The entrance fee of $30 will help fund The American's Psychoanalytic Fellowship program. Please join the fun and encourage colleagues, friends, and spouses to participate.
