Pychoanalysis and Sexuality is the theme of the 40th Congress of the International Psychoanalytical Association, to be held this summer in the fascinating and beautiful city of Barcelona, Spain. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English, French, Spanish, and German.
The scientific meetings begin Monday, July 28, with plenary sessions Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings. The plenaries are: “Review of the Psychoanalytic Theory of Sexuality”; “Sexuality in Psychoanalytical Treatment”; and “Psychoanalysis and Present-Day Sexuality.”
The afternoons will be devoted to discussion panels, workshops, and individual papers. In addition, there will be a special half-day program on the analysis of adolescents, and another on the analysis of children.
The last Congress day, Friday, August 1, starts with Congress summaries by Horacio Etchegoyen, immediate past-president, and Otto Kernberg, who will have just assumed office as president of the IPA. An overview panel discussion will be followed in the afternoon by a roundtable discussion, “Challenges Facing Today's Psychoanalytic Practice.” Discussants include analysts from around the world, including Marvin Margolis and Robert Pyles.
IPA congresses are antidotes to parochialism and provincialism in psychoanalytic thinking, as well as being held in interesting places. These congresses offer an unusual opportunity to see psychoanalysis as a vibrant, dynamic, and stimulating world of ideas, opinions, concepts, and challenges. In the Michelin Guide to Congresses, it would rate the highest, three-star award.

Correction
In the last issue of TAP the final sentence in Ellen Rowntree's article, COPE Studies Psychoanalytic Supervision, should have read. “Moving away from a more authoritarian approach to on that is more truly collegialon the national level will encourage the development of this in the educational structure of our institutes, to the advantage of our teachers, our students, and our profession. The end of the sentence erroneously was printed “to the advantage of the COPE Committee on Supervision.” We apologizeforthe mistake.
