The 87th Annual Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association is scheduled for May 27-31 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. Toronto, a cosmopolitan city, is rich in cultural diversity and sophistication. Toronto is also rich in analytic tradition, yet very contemporary, as evidenced by its past connection with Ernest Jones and its present connection with Professor Charles Hanly.
The meeting promises to have an international flavor, both socially and analytically. It will feature new looks at classic topics, including a panel on “The Mechanism of Action of Psychoanalytic Treatment,” chaired by Brian Robertson of Montreal, with Lewe Aron, Steven Levy, Robert Michels, and Joseph Sandler as panelists. Other scheduled panels are “The Impact on Clinical Work of the Analysts' Idealizations and Identifications,” chaired by Robert Glick, with contributions by Arnold Cooper, Margaret-Ann Fitzpatrick Hanley, Jane Kite, and Henry Smith, and “The Classics Revisited: Freud's Final Model: The Ego and The Id and Inhibitions, Symptoms, and Anxiety,” chaired by Charles Hanly, with contributions by Charles Brenner, Norman Dodge, Ruth Imber, Arnold H. Modell, and Theodore Shapiro. “A Return to Basics: The Psychoanalytic Conceptualization of Motivation” will feature Jay Greenberg, Adrienne Harris, Joseph Lichtenberg, Mervyn Peskin, Owen Renik, and Alan Kindler as discussants.
The plenary address will be given by Warren Poland. The meeting will also have special programs for spouses and trainees, plus an exciting array of discussion groups. The interest and excitement of the last few meetings will continue to build and blossom. It is not to be missed. See you there.
