Thank you for the enthusiastic review of our interdisciplinary conference on “Amae Reconsidered” in the article “Amae at The American” by Joseph Abrahams in TAP 31/4. We were pleasantly surprised and grateful for this warm review.
However, unfortunately and I am sure inadvertently, the second paragraph seems to imply that this two-day conference was organized collaboratively by me and Dr. Frank Johnson as a result of our work over a long period of time. Although Frank Johnson was an invited presenter and has contributed to our interdisciplinary colloquia in the past, credit for the extensive work in preparing for this conference should be given to my two colleagues and co-chairs, Dr. Yasuhiko Taketomo of Scarsdale, N.Y., and Dr. Osamu Kitayama of Tokyo and Fukuoka, Japan. In addition to being presenters, they initiated the idea for this conference and worked with me over many months to make it a reality. The conference was an outgrowth of our having worked together in organizing 13 scientific, crosscultural psychoanalytic meetings in the U.S. related to Japanese culture over the past decade, as well as our collaboration in many meetings in Japan.
