The plenary address at this year's Annual Meeting of the American Psychoanalytic Association will be presented by Glen Gabbard. The Program Committee's unanimous choice for this honor, Gabbard is the Bessie Walker Callaway Distinguished Professor of Psychoanalysis and Education at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Sciences. He is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Wichita, and is also a training and supervising analyst and the director of the Topeka Institute for Psychoanalysis.
Gabbard, one of the most sought-after lecturers in the field here and abroad, is the author or editor of twelve books, including Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice (an all-time best seller at American Psychiatric Press), Boundaries and Boundary Violations in Psychoanalysis (with Eva Lester), Management of Countertransference with Borderline Patients (with Sallye Wilkinson), Sexual Exploitation Within Professional Relationships, Psychiatry and the Cinema (with Krin Gabbard), and Love and Hate in the Analytic Setting. He is also editor-in-chief of the second edition of Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders and the author of more than 150 scientific papers and chapters of books. Given his relatively young age, it would seem he is just getting started.
For the past five years he has been an associate editor of JAPA, with the specific assignment of editing the JAPA Review of Books. In that short time, he has made that journal-within-a-journal a vital psychoanalytic resource. He is also on the editorial boards of numerous journals, including the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, Psychoanalytic Quarterly, Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Psychoanalytic Dialogues, Psychoanalytic Books, the Journal of Psychotherapy Practice and Research, and Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic.
Gabbard has received numerous awards, including the Edward A. Strecker Award of the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital, the Distinguished Psychiatrist Lecturer Award of the American Psychiatric Association, the Charles Burlingame Award of the Institute of Living, the Wolfe Adler Award of Sheppard and Pratt Hospital, the Sigmund Freud Award of the American Society for Psychoanalytic Physicians, and the Psychiatric Times Teacher of the Year Award. He has been selected twice as the William C. Menninger Teacher of the Year at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Sciences.
In his spare time — it's a mystery where he finds it — he co-chairs the APsaA Program Committee, chairs its Joint Committee on Confidentiality, and is a member of its Ethics Committee; serves as North American co-chair of the Program Committee of the 1999 International Psychoanalytical Association Training Analyst Congress in Santiago, Chile; chairs the IPA's Committee on Elections; sits on the Board of Regents of the American College of Psychiatrists and chairs its Program Committee; is vice-chair of the APA Commission on Psychotherapy by Psychiatrists; and participates in the APA Practice Guidelines Work Group on Borderline Personality Disorder.
The title of Gabbard's plenary address is “On Gratitude and Gratification.” Lawrence Friedman will introduce him to what surely will be an overflow audience.
