Psychoanalysis has a great deal to offer in the exploration of issues of power, conflict and reconciliation — issues that affect each of us as individuals and members of the global family. However, theoretical and conceptual understandings of power and gender differences have only recently been addressed by psychoanalysts in this country and internationally.
We are very pleased to announce a groundbreaking and timely international interdisciplinary conference, February 25–27, 2000: “Women and Power — Psychoanalytic Perspectives on Women in Relationships, Groups, and Hierarchies,” jointly sponsored by the Committee on Women and Psychoanalysis (COWAP) of the International Psychoanalytical Association; the American Psychoanalytic Association; and Emory University's Psychoanalytic Institute, Department of Psychiatry, and Behavioral Sciences of the School of Medicine. Chairing the conference will be Beth J. Seelig, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Emory University and Director of the Emory University Psychoanalytic Institute, and Robert A. Paul, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Anthropology at Emory University.
This symposium is the first of a series of conferences sponsored by COWAP in North America. Participants will attend from North America, Latin America, and Europe. The subject of the meeting is expected to be of great interest to psychoanalysts as well as to scholars in many other fields. Papers presented at the conference will be published in book form. The format will include invited presentations, panels, individual paper sessions and small discussion groups led by the invited participants.
