The Council of Editors of Psychoanalytic Journals, founded and chaired by Joseph Reppen, held its third annual luncheon meeting on December 18, 1999, in the Library of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis. The meeting was attended by twenty-five editors representing twenty-three journals, plus three related organization representatives.
Among the foreign journals represented were Forum der Psychanalyse, International Forum of Psychoanalysis, Journal of European Psychoanalysis, Psyche, Psychoanalysis and History, and, of course, the International Journal of Psycho-Analysis. Many crucial questions were addressed that relate to the complexity of editing psychoanalytic journals in the twenty-first century. Issues discussed, in what the chair described as an ideology-free zone, were the PEP CD-ROM, confidentiality, translation problems, publishing online, writing workshops, consulting with authors to improve their work, the future of print publication, and the need to recruit some of the forty or so psychoanalytic journals that have not yet joined the Council, particularly in Asia and South America.
During 2000, two new journals will appear: the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy, edited by Kirkland Vaughns and published by The Other Press, and Studies in Gender and Sexuality, edited by Virginia Goldner and published by the Analytic Press. During 1999, several journals joined the Council, including Psyche and a Russian psychoanalytic journal.
The American is well represented among editors of psychoanalytic journals, with twelve of the sixty-four journals in the council edited by members of the American. These include Annual of Psychoanalysis, Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic, Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Gender and Psychoanalysis, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Journal of Applied Psychoanalytic Studies, Journal of Clinical Psychoanalysis, Neuro-Psychoanalysis, Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Psychoanalytic Psychology, The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, and Psychoanalytic Study of the Child. Many members also serve as associate editors or members of editorial boards of journals not mentioned.
The council is a thriving and exciting organization and a testament to the vitality of worldwide psychoanalysis. For more information, contact Joseph Reppen, Ph.D., 211 East 70th Street, New York, NY 10021; fax 212-628-8453 or e-mail .
