The American congratulates two of our members who were recently elected officers of the American Psychiatric Association (APA). Marcia Kraft Goin from Los Angeles was elected Vice President, and Norman (Drew) Clemens of Cleveland, Ohio, was re-elected Area 4 Trustee after completing a three-year term. Both reached office by a wide vote margin.
Goin's activities in the APA have include three years as a member of the Board of Trustees as trustee-at-large. She served as chair of both the APA's Committee on Confidentiality and Committee on the Practice of Psychotherapy. She is a liaison to the Steering Committee on Practice Guidelines and a member of the work group developing a practice guideline for the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder. Says Goin:
Psychiatrists have a constant battle on their hands to preserve, educate, and practice psychodynamically informed psychotherapy. The pressure of economics as reflected in managed care, coupled with advances in biological psychiatry that some wrongly perceive as being able to cure all the psychiatrically ill, means that we have some mighty tough battles to fight.
In addition to his service as Area 4 Trustee, Clemens has chaired the APA's Commission on Psychotherapy by Psychiatrists for four years and is a former Speaker of the Assembly of the APA.
