Karen Shore, co-founder and president of the National Coalition of Mental Health Professionals and Consumers, was elected to honorary membership by the Executive Council. The coalition is a grassroots organization of mental health professionals from all disciplines, consumers of mental health services, and consumer advocates. Its goal is to preserve high-quality care and consumers' rights to choice, personal privacy, and control over treatment decisions.
Under Shore's guidance, the coalition has made known the managed care invasions of privacy, abuses of confidentiality, and denials of care, with the associated human costs. A clinical psychologist, she also trained in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis at Adelphi University's Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies. (Excerpts from Shore's remarks upon receiving honorary membership are found on page 25.)
Seth Stein was awarded an APsaA Presidential Commendation for his work on behalf of patients' rights to privacy. Stein, a lawyer specializing in mental health law, is the executive director of the New York State Psychiatric Association (NYSPA) and that association's legal counsel. He wrote the amicus brief jointly filed by the American and the NYSPA in the Bierenbaum case (reported in TAP 34/4). In his remarks to the members, Stein stated that the results in Bierenbaum represented “the most recent restatement and unequivocal endorsement of confidentiality within the legal system.” The court, he continued, endorsed a principle that we take for granted but that has clearly been under attack.
