Last June the IPA launched a campaign to raise money from its members in support of the IPA's Han Groen-Prakken Psychoanalytic Institute for Eastern Europe. The funds raised will provide interest free loans to candidates from Eastern Europe who need to make occasional visits to West European countries for their personal analysis in a process called shuttle analysis. The campaign has been a success. About $30,000 has been raised and initial loans are to be awarded to Russian and Ukrainian candidates. The IPA is also planning to approach funding agencies in support of this cause. It is expected that the generosity of the IPA's own members will help encourage external agencies to make grants for this purpose.
Plans are well advanced for the IPA's next Congress in Toronto, Canada with the theme ‘Working at the Frontiers’. It runs from Tuesday 29 July to Saturday 2 August 2003. TAP 36/2 reported on the new format for this shorter, new style Congress. Registration will open in November, and for the first time, IPA members will be able to register on-line through the IPA website from January 2003.
The 2001 IPA Congress was held in Nice, France. After next year's event in Toronto, the IPA has now announced its next Congresses will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2005 and in Berlin, Germany in 2007. As these events rotate between the continents, the 2009 Congress would normally expect to be held in North America. The last Congress in the USA was in San Francisco in 1995. Any offers for 2009?
Watch out for the newly designed IPA magazine which you will get in December. It has been completely remodelled in response to readers' comments. Alex Holder, the IPA editor, would very much like to hear your reactions to it.
You can expect to receive the new, 2003 IPA Membership Handbook and Roster by the end of this year, with an expanded Members Handbook section.
