Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing is now fully self-funding, having paid back its loans several years ago to both parent organizations: the American Psychoanalytic Association and the British Institute of Psychoanalysis. Continuing that trend, PEP has awarded both parent organizations a grant for $35,000 each for 2002, an increase of 14 percent over the preceding year. PEP will retain the balance of its profits. The aim is to keep a substantial financial reserve which will allow PEP, without recourse to borrowing, to invest substantially to obtain the rights to important material (including the newly revised Freud Standard Edition) and to prepare it electronically for inclusion in one or more of the archive updates. PEP's long-term strategy is one of both outreach and finance: to include all significant English-language psychoanalytic writing and to try to make the PEP database available in every major university in the world.
A major development in September was the successful completion of the live trial of PEP Web and the purchase of the first licenses by five major universities. PEP Archive I, version 4, is to be released in time for the IPA congress in Toronto. Prepublication sales for PEP archive owners begin in March 2003. Check PEP's website (p-e-p.org) for more information.
The new archive release will consist of the Scandinavian Journal of Psychoanalysis, the Annual of Psychoanalysis, and Psychoanalytic Psychology. Also included will be an array of classic books by Didier Anzieu, Bion, Fairbairn, Klein, Spence, Stern, Winnicott, and others.
The PEP board—Nadine Levinson and David Tuckett as Managing Directors, plus Alice Brand Bartlett, Peter Fonagy, Martin Miller, and Paul Mosher—is very pleased with PEP's progress. PEP is increasingly securing a strong position in the future as an information provider on Web or CD. At the meeting of APsaA's Executive Council, Steve Firestein and Jonah Schein were appointed PEP trustees. They will review PEP's finances, activities, and operations yearly.
PEP has had a successful 2002. With further work the project can contribute a great deal to scholarship, psychoanalysis, and its two parent organizations.
