De Oedipusmythe kan op drie manieren benaderd worden: als theoretisch hulpmiddel, als cultuur-historisch verschijnsel en als casus. Deze laatste invalshoek is voor de psychoanalytische theorie en praktijk van weinig nut, hoogstens als illustratie van de geschiedenis ervan.
