Exploring fear and expressing feelings in affect phobia therapy: A plea for integration in psychodynamic therapy
Many patients were forced as children to put up defences against their feelings and anxieties. As a result, they [1] have not learned to recognise the emotional and physical characertistics accompanying fear and regulate their anxiety and [2] have not developed the skills to express their feelings in an appropriate way. These competences have received little attention in psychodynamic therapy. Applying interventions rooted in Affect Phobia Therapy can be a fitting addition, owing to the experiential and cognitive behavioural techniques that are part and parcel of the psychodynamic context in which APT is practised.
