Psychoanalysis and research: out of « splendid isolation »
This paper provides a brief overview of the current state of research on psychodynamic concepts, theories and treatments, showing that psychoanalysis has strikingly enhanced its scientific standing in general and empirical support for its treatments in particular. This does not alter the fact that there is still a lot of work to be done, not only in terms of the quality and quantity of scientific research, but also in relation to the place and attitude towards scientific research in psychoanalytic training and practice. The persistent negative bias towards psychoanalytical views and forms of treatment in some circles, a regrettable legacy from the past, to which psychoanalysts themselves have largely contributed, is an important limiting factor. Admittedly, however, attitudes within and outside the psychoanalytic community are now changing in this respect. This paper concludes with some suggestions regarding the role of research in psychoanalytic training and practice.
