About Reading Bion
This article explores Rudi Vermote's survey of the developments in Bion's thinking in his book Reading Bion (2019). The significance of Bion's concept of O for psychoanalytic technique is highlighted. Elucidation of O is attempted by picturing the figure of Dostoyevsky's Prince Myshkin in The Idiot as an incarnation of O. Distinguishable from Vermote's reading of Bion is the significance attributed by Bion to Freud's description of consciousness in The Interpretation of Dreams (1900a) as «the sense organ for the perception of psychic qualities». Hypothesised is the possible importance that this definition may have had as a precursor of O.
