The risk of « Othering »
The relationship between the Self and the Other is a complicated one, in which the Self on the one hand needs the Other for its own existence and meaning. On the other hand, the Self tends to distinguish itself from the Other, by declaring the Other as different, which clears the way for a phenomenon we call « othering ». When othering lurks, the Self risks losing sight of the ethical dimension in the relationship with the Other. An awareness of the tendency to othering is necessary for the therapist in treatment. This article focuses on the scope of the ethnic Other.
