Projective tests and the indication for psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis
Projective tests, the Rorschach test and the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) being its most important representatives, can sometimes be dismissed as pseudo-science. In this article the scientific status of these instruments is first elucidated. Next, the process of engagement between projective tests and psychoanalysis is covered. In many cases, their attraction is based on an alleged ability to penetrate down to the unconscious. However, this is seldom the case. Consideration is given to the fact that there are valid arguments for applying indirect methods of personality assessment during the indication for any form of psychoanalytic treatment.
